SIRE Director Lili Kellogg welcoming the volunteers

The Spring site was a beehive of activity on Saturday, April 26th when volunteers from both Comcast/NBCUniversal and SIRE came together to participate in Comcast Cares Day.   The first wave of Comcast employees started to arrive at 7:00am to set up tables and tents for volunteer sign in, t-shirt distribution and, most importantly, breakfast!  Sign in started at 8:00am and there was soon a very large crowd ready to work.  SIRE Director Lili Kellogg gave a short welcome and then the magic started.

Spring’s large arena has had temporary fencing since it was first installed.  It was functional but not very attractive.  The new wood fence was started on a Dow work day several months ago but only one end of the arena was able to be completed.  A large group of the Comcast and SIRE volunteers went to work on the fence and by lunchtime it was up and even painted with wood seal.  We are immensely excited and proud of this accomplishment and can’t wait for the
All SIRE horse show on May 10th to show it off.

Our sensory trail now has a new attraction!  We have a “double” horse wash set into permanent wooden posts with PVC piping that can be easily lowered for noodle replacement.  The existing horse wash was given new noodles to replace the old and faded ones.  Our trails were also cleared of branches and debris.

Our “laundry list” of things that we wanted to get accomplished also included sealing our wooden ramp to the office, our wooden picnic tables and our new mounting ramp.  All of these things were done.  We wanted to plant an herb garden near our office in an old water trough.  We checked that off our list along with the bonus of having the flower bed in front of our office weeded.  We also had another herb garden put in down near our small arena.  The planting of that drew the attention of our resident deer which stopped by for a visit and some petting and pictures.  The rose bushes that line our mounting area were trimmed and weeded.  And our wooden trail course bridge was painted white.

All of that was completed before noontime.  A tired but happy group sat down to lunch from Jason’s Deli.  Not only were we the recipients of all that hard work but SIRE will receive a grant of up to $15.00 for every person that volunteered on Saturday.   Many, many thanks to all of the Comcast and SIRE volunteers that worked so hard on Saturday to make the Spring site look so wonderful.  We can’t wait for everyone to see it!
